eSIM, privacy and crypto glossary
The terms behind eSIM setup, private access and cryptocurrency payments.

- eSIM
- An eSIM stores a downloadable mobile subscription profile on a compatible device instead of requiring a removable SIM card.
- KYC
- Know Your Customer describes checks used by a service provider to establish and verify a customer's identity.
- No-KYC
- No-KYC describes a seller's lack of identity-verification checks, not the absence of network identifiers, payment records or other providers' requirements.
- Private capability link
- A private capability link contains a secret that grants access to a resource, so anyone holding the complete link can use it.
- SM-DP+
- The Subscription Manager Data Preparation service securely prepares and delivers eSIM profiles to compatible devices.
- LPA
- The Local Profile Assistant is the device-side component that helps download and manage eSIM profiles.
- ICCID
- The Integrated Circuit Card Identifier identifies a SIM card or eSIM profile rather than identifying the phone itself.
- IMSI
- The International Mobile Subscriber Identity is an operator-issued identifier associated with a mobile subscription.
- IMEI
- The International Mobile Equipment Identity identifies cellular equipment and is distinct from the identifiers of its SIM subscriptions.
- Data roaming
- Data roaming lets a mobile subscription use a network outside its home network, subject to the plan's coverage and terms.
- APN
- An Access Point Name identifies the mobile-data network connection settings required by a subscription.
- Hotspot
- A mobile hotspot shares a phone's data connection with other devices, whose traffic uses the same data allowance.
- Data minimization
- Data minimization means limiting collected and retained information to what is needed for a specific purpose.
- Pseudonymity
- Pseudonymity means using an identifier instead of a name, without guaranteeing that activity cannot be linked to an identity.
- Metadata
- Metadata describes an activity, such as its time, participants or network location, rather than the contents of the communication.
- End-to-end encryption
- End-to-end encryption protects message contents so that only the communicating endpoints hold the keys needed to read them.
- Bitcoin
- Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency with a public transaction ledger; using an address instead of a name does not guarantee payment privacy.
- Monero
- Monero is a cryptocurrency designed to conceal transaction senders, recipients and amounts on its ledger by default.
- Cryptocurrency payment
- A cryptocurrency payment transfers a digital asset on a specified network, whose fees, confirmation rules and privacy properties depend on that network.
- Zero-knowledge proof
- A zero-knowledge proof demonstrates that a statement is true without revealing the secret information used to establish it.
